In 2017, Malti the elephant was beaten for up to 10 minutes after she tried to escape the misery of carrying tourists uphill in extreme heat. Earlier this year, when she went berserk again and fought with another elephant – a sign of serious psychological distress – handlers tried to use sticks to control both animals and shouted at them

In response, PETA India fired off a letter to Rajasthan Forest Minister Shri Sukhram Vishnoi demanding that Malti be rescued immediately, leading him to direct the state’s chief wildlife warden to take strict and immediate action to ensure that Malti was rescued and rehabilitated. But she continues to be used for rides.

Other elephants at Amer Fort need our help, too. They’re often controlled with iron-tipped wooden sticks (in violation of the directives of the Rajasthan High Court). Their sensitive ears are commonly pierced and holes are drilled into their tusks so that they can be led using hooks, and they’re forced to carry tourists and heavy gear uphill in extreme heat. Some of the elephants used are visually impaired or injured. In the past, some even tested reactive to tuberculosis, which can be transmitted to humans.
